On 29 May, 50 Operation Smile volunteer health professionals from across the country converged at Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Johannesburg for a weekend of life-changing cleft surgery.

From the first day of health screenings – where 54 tiny patients were thoroughly examined and 40 cleared for surgery – to the joyful moments in the recovery ward, our hearts overflowed with pride and gratitude for the privilege of being part of this life-changing work.

Special thanks to the specialist paediatric team at Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, Life Healthcare and Radisson Blue Hotel for accommodating our team.

Every operation is about so much more than what happens in theatre. It’s about the welcoming smiles … the reassuring hugs … the kindness and enthusiasm of the volunteers … and the courage shown by every child and family on this journey.

Rorisang and Lebone

Some of the patients were already well known to us – and to supporters who follow our work. We were delighted to welcome back two-year-old Rorisang and his mother, Lebone Tolomane, from Potchefstroom. Last year, Rorisang had cleft lip surgery which has healed beautifully. But he also has a cleft palate, which required further surgery.

Thank you to every volunteer, sponsor, donor, partner, and member of the hospital team for helping to make these moments a reality.

Because access to safe surgery should not depend on where you are born or your financial circumstances.
