During our recent surgical programme at Rob Ferreira Hospital in Nelspruit, the hospital opened up its dental department over the weekend. This provided convenient access to school children, who find it difficult to get to the hospital during normal working hours.

Head of the dental department at the hospital, Dr Marius van der Walt, is a long-standing volunteer for Operation Smile. His dedication to helping children was behind the initiative.

No fewer than 81 children under 12 turned up to have dental problems treated. At the same time, they received information about the importance of good oral hygiene, which will positively impact their dental health going forward.
