This Christmas, my son has the greatest gift of all … a new smile

Athandwa

All thanks to Operation Smile – and YOU!

Being blessed with twins should have been a joyful celebration. But for Athandwa’s mother, those early months were overshadowed by worry. One of her babies was born with a cleft lip and palate.

“It wasn’t easy for me when I saw him that way,” she remembers. “Feeding him was hard. He couldn’t swallow properly.” While his twin grew stronger each day, Athandwa struggled to gain weight. His anxious mother felt helpless.

Then, hope arrived in the most unexpected way.

At just a few months old, Athandwa was admitted to Madzikane Ka Zulu Hospital in the Eastern Cape for a suspected fracture. While treating him, the medical team told his mom about Operation Smile. It was the first time she learned that free, life-changing surgery might be possible for her son.

And, thanks to our generous partners, volunteers, and compassionate people like you – that glimmer of hope became a reality.

Athandwa had cleft lip surgery two years ago. This year, his mom brought him back to our surgical programme at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha for his cleft palate surgery.

Today, he is thriving, playful and confident – and learning to talk alongside his twin.

“He still struggles with some words,” his mom says with a smile. “But we understand him. Having a cleft lip and palate is not the end of the road. Children like Athandwa can grow, learn, and smile – thanks to Operation Smile.”

This Christmas, you can give something more meaningful than anything under a tree – you can give a child born with a cleft lip or palate the chance to shine like the brightest little star.

Unlike most other presents you give this festive season, the gift of a new smile lasts a lifetime. As little as R250 makes a difference.

All you have to do is fill in the form to donate now.

Or donate in lieu of a Christmas gift for a friend or business colleague. Add a special message and we’ll send them an e-card to let them know of your thoughtful gesture.

Thank you for caring about children who might otherwise not have access to safe surgery. Thank you for giving them the chance to eat, speak and smile with confidence.

May you enjoy a safe and happy festive season – filled with all the blessings you give others so generously.
